How Do I Optimize an Amazon Listing? – Every Element Explained
A fully optimised Amazon listing does two jobs at once – it gets your product found, and it converts the traffic into sales. Most sellers do one or the other. This guide shows you how to do both.

Optimisation is both an SEO project and a sales project
Keywords get you found. Images, bullets, and A+ Content convert traffic into sales. A listing optimised only for keywords but not for conversion will rank and not sell. A listing optimised only for conversion but not for keywords will sell and not rank. You need both.

Never Done
Optimisation Is Ongoing
A listing set up once and never updated loses ground as competitors improve. The best listings are audited and refreshed regularly.
Your Amazon listing is your sales page, your shop window, and your search engine result all in one. Over 60% of online shoppers start their product research on Amazon – which means more buyers see your listing than your website, your Instagram, and your ads combined. Getting that listing wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes an Amazon seller can make. This guide walks through every element of a well-optimised Amazon listing – what it does, the rules that govern it, and exactly how to write or design it for maximum impact.

🗂️ The Anatomy of a Fully Optimised Listing
Every Amazon product page is made up of the same eight elements. Each one does a different job – some help you get found, some help you convert, and the best ones do both.
📊 Amazon listing anatomy – where each element appears and what it does

🏷️ Element 1: Product Title
1
Product Title – your most important ranking element
Critical
Your title is the first thing Amazon’s algorithm reads and the first thing buyers see in search results. Your title is your best chance to be featured in a search result and maximise visibility. Capture the essence of your product using the formula: Brand Name → Product Type → Key Features → Size/Colour/Quantity.
HydroMate Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle 32oz – Leakproof, BPA-Free, Wide Mouth with Carry Loop
✓
Primary keyword in the first 5 words. Amazon weights the opening of the title most heavily. Lead with your top keyword naturally – not your brand name unless you have strong brand equity.
✓
Stay under 200 characters. 200 characters is enough for a descriptive product title. Use the full length to provide as much useful information as possible. Titles over 200 characters may be truncated in search results.
✗
Amazon does not allow certain phrases such as “high quality” or “best seller” as well as promotional messages such as “free shipping.” Including these risks listing suppression.
📸 Element 2: Main Image and Gallery
2
Images – the most powerful conversion element on your listing
Critical
Buyers form a visual impression before they read a word. Your main image competes in search results against every competing product thumbnail – it must win that comparison before any other element gets a chance to matter.
Main image rules (mandatory)
✓
Pure white background (RGB 255,255,255). Amazon requires this and enforces it. Any other background risks suppression.
✓
Product fills at least 85% of the image frame. Small products surrounded by white space look unprofessional and lose the thumbnail comparison.
✓
Minimum 1,000px on the longest side. This enables Amazon’s zoom feature – buyers who zoom convert at higher rates.
✗
No props, text, watermarks, or inset images. The main image must show only the product. Save all lifestyle context for the gallery images.
Gallery images (your conversion engine)
→
Use all 7 to 9 image slots. Each gallery image should answer a specific buyer question or handle a common objection – lifestyle in use, key features called out, size comparison, packaging, what’s in the box.
→
Add a product video. A high-quality video is fantastic, but even an older, clear video with a strong sales pitch is better than no video at all. The purpose is to deliver a message about the product and sell the benefits.
📦 Amazon Solutions
Need a full listing built or rebuilt from scratch?
Our Amazon solutions service covers every listing element – keyword research, title writing, benefit-led bullets, A+ Content design, and backend optimisation – built to rank and convert simultaneously.
Bullet points – five chances to convert a browser into a buyer
Critical
Your five bullet points are the first copy most buyers read. They scan, not read – which means each bullet must lead with the benefit, not the feature. Bullet points must include every important feature that distinguishes you from competitors. Keep it interesting and convincing enough for a buyer to make a purchase.
❌ Feature-led bullet
DOUBLE-WALL VACUUM INSULATION – Features 18/8 stainless steel construction with double-wall vacuum insulation technology
✅ Benefit-led bullet
STILL COLD AT 5PM – Double-wall vacuum insulation keeps your drink cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 – whether you’re at your desk or on a trail
✓
Lead with the outcome, not the feature. Every bullet should answer the question “what does this mean for the buyer’s life?” – not just “what does this product have?”
✓
Use CAPS for the opening phrase. Amazon’s formatting renders bullets in plain text. Capitalising the opening hook creates visual hierarchy that draws the eye – and buyers who scan read the caps first.
✓
Address objections, not just features. Every category has a top 3 buyer objection – “will it leak?”, “is it safe for kids?”, “how does sizing run?” Use your bullets to directly handle the most common doubts before they trigger a back-click.
✓
Weave in secondary keywords naturally. Bullets are indexed by Amazon’s algorithm. Include relevant keywords – but only where they fit naturally into benefit-led copy. Never sacrifice readability for keyword density.
📄 Element 4: Product Description
4
Product description – 2,000 characters for buyers who want more
Medium priority
Your product description is where you can expand on features and benefits that didn’t fit in your title or bullet points. You’ve got 2,000 characters to address consumer pain points and convey how your product will positively improve their life.
If you have A+ Content active, the description is replaced and buyers cannot see it – but Amazon’s algorithm can still index the text. If you do not have A+ Content, the description is the last piece of copy that can convert a buyer who scrolled that far.
✓
Write for the buyer who wants more detail. Buyers who reach the description have not converted yet. They have a question the bullets didn’t answer. Address it here – use case details, size guides, compatibility information, warranty terms.
✓
Include remaining keywords naturally. The description is indexed by Amazon. Any relevant keywords you could not fit naturally into the title and bullets have a home here.
→
Use basic HTML formatting. Line breaks (<br>) and bold (<b>) tags are supported in descriptions and improve readability in the plain-text rendering of the detail page.
🔒 Element 5: Backend Search Terms
5
Backend keywords – invisible to buyers, valuable to ranking
High priority
Backend search terms are entered in Seller Central and are never visible to buyers. They exist purely for Amazon’s indexing algorithm – giving you a place to add keyword variants, misspellings, and alternate terms without cluttering your customer-facing copy.
✓
250-byte limit – bytes, not characters. Do not exceed this or Amazon may ignore the entire field. Use a byte counter before saving. Separate words with spaces – no commas needed.
✓
Add what won’t fit naturally in visible copy. Misspellings (15 to 20% of searches contain typos), Spanish translations for US audiences, abbreviations (“SS” for stainless steel), and alternate product names all belong here.
✗
Never repeat words already in your title. Amazon ignores duplicates – repeating a title keyword in the backend wastes your byte limit on zero additional benefit.
✗
No competitor brand names. Including competitor trademarked terms risks IP infringement claims and potential listing suspension.
📢 Amazon PPC Management
Use your PPC data to find the best keywords for your listing
Our Amazon PPC management service uses real search term report data to find which keywords buyers actually convert on – then feeds the best ones back into your listing and backend terms for compounding organic rank.
A+ Content – conversion lift available to Brand Registry sellers
High priority
A+ Content replaces the plain text description with visual modules – brand story, lifestyle images, feature callouts, and a product comparison chart. Amazon’s own data shows Basic A+ lifts conversion rate by 3 to 10%, and Premium A+ by up to 20%.
✓
Do not repeat your bullet points. A+ is read by buyers who already skimmed the bullets. Repeating the same information adds no value. Use A+ for brand story, lifestyle context, comparison charts, and objection handling you could not fit above the fold.
✓
Always include a product comparison chart. The comparison chart is the highest-converting single element available in Basic A+. It helps buyers choose the right variant from your catalogue and builds trust through category depth.
✓
Test on mobile before publishing. Over 60% of Amazon browsers are on mobile. Text that reads clearly on desktop often becomes illegible when scaled down on a phone screen. Always check on a real device.
→
Write A+ for Amazon Rufus. Amazon’s AI shopping assistant reads your A+ Content to answer buyer questions. Structure it to directly answer the specific questions buyers in your category most commonly ask.
💰 Elements 7 and 8: Price and Reviews
7
Price – competitive not cheapest, and always monitored
High priority
Keep prices competitive – keep your prices lower than or equal to the lowest price from other major retailers off Amazon. Track what your on-Amazon competitors are charging. Price new products lower if you don’t have enough reviews for social proof yet.
✓
Check the Pricing Health Dashboard. This tool in Seller Central flags listings with pricing issues that may have caused deactivation or suppression – issues most sellers do not notice until sales drop.
✓
Do not underprice into unprofitability. Buyers use price as a quality signal. A premium product priced significantly below comparable competitors triggers doubt, not desire. Aim for competitive, not minimum.
8
Reviews and Q&A – trust signals that convert and rank
Critical
Reviews are not a listing element you write – they are a listing element you earn. But where they appear and how you respond to them is entirely within your control, and both matter enormously for conversion rate.
✓
Target 4.0 stars as your minimum. Amazon ranks products higher that have 4+ star ratings, because they’re in the business to earn conversions, and people are more likely to purchase products with higher ratings. Below 4.0, conversion drops significantly.
✓
Respond to negative reviews publicly. A professional, empathetic response to a one-star review shows future buyers how you handle problems. It is often more trust-building than a five-star review.
✓
Answer all Q&A questions within 24 hours. Unanswered Q&A questions are lost sales. Buyers with unanswered questions either choose a competitor who answered or abandon the purchase entirely.

⚙️ Amazon Account Management
Already live but not converting the way you expected?
Our Amazon account management service runs a full listing audit against every element above – identifying exactly what is costing you conversions and building a structured optimisation plan to fix it.
How long does Amazon listing optimisation take to show results?
Keyword and backend changes index within 24 to 72 hours. Conversion rate improvements from better images, bullets, and A+ Content typically show in your unit session percentage within 14 to 21 days as enough traffic has flowed through to generate statistically meaningful data. Ranking improvements driven by better conversion rate typically follow within 4 to 6 weeks of a sustained conversion improvement.
Does the product description matter if I have A+ Content?
A+ Content replaces the product description visually – buyers cannot see your description text if A+ Content is active. However, Amazon’s algorithm can still index the text in your description field. Best practice is to keep a well-written, keyword-rich description in the field even with A+ Content active, because the indexing benefit remains even though buyers cannot see it.
How many images should an Amazon listing have?
Use every available image slot – typically 7 to 9 images plus a video. The first image must be a clean main product shot on a white background. Gallery images should tell a visual story: lifestyle in use, key features with text callouts, size comparison, what’s in the box, and close-up detail shots. Listings with fewer than 5 images consistently underperform compared to fully stocked galleries across almost every category.
What is the most important element to optimise first?
Your main image, if you are already getting traffic but not converting. Your title and backend keywords, if you are not getting traffic yet. The main image is the first thing buyers see in search results and determines whether they click through at all – making it the single highest-leverage element for most listings that already have reasonable keyword coverage. If your listing gets fewer than 10 sessions per day, keyword optimisation comes first because the problem is visibility, not conversion.
How often should I update my Amazon listing?
Run a full optimisation review every 90 days as a minimum, and after any significant event – a new competitor entering your category, a change in your product, or a meaningful shift in your review rating. Check Brand Analytics monthly to find new keyword opportunities and monitor competitor listings regularly to ensure your listing does not appear dated or less complete by comparison. Amazon rewards listings that stay current and relevant.
