Why Is My Amazon Listing Not Ranking? — Diagnose and Fix It

Your listing is live. Your ads are running. But the organic rank is nowhere. There are eight specific reasons this happens — and every single one has a fix. Start with Step 1 of the diagnostic and work down.

Diagnose before you fix — the cause determines the solution

Adding more keywords or spending more on ads will not fix a suppressed listing, a de-indexed keyword, or a conversion rate problem. The correct fix depends entirely on the correct diagnosis. Run through the steps below in order — they go from fastest to fix to most complex.

🚫
Suppressed
Listing Hidden by Amazon
Policy violation, bad image, or missing attribute. Amazon has hidden your listing. Fix the error first — nothing else matters until you do.
🗂️
Not Indexed
Keyword Not Registered
Your listing exists but Amazon does not connect it to the keyword you want. You cannot rank for a keyword Amazon has not indexed you for.
📉
Indexed But Buried
Low Sales Velocity Signal
Amazon sees your listing but ranks it low because it is not converting or selling consistently enough to deserve a higher position.

Before you change anything — diagnose first. We see sellers add more keywords, increase PPC bids, and refresh A+ Content on listings that are suppressed. None of that helps a suppressed listing. The wrong fix wastes time and can make things worse. More keywords or constant changes won’t fix ranking issues and can actually hurt performance. Read this guide in order. Identify which of the eight reasons applies to your situation. Then apply the specific fix for that reason — not a general optimisation.

🔍 Step 1: Run the 3-Question Diagnosis First

Before doing anything else, run through these three checks in order. They will tell you which category your problem falls into and which reason to jump to.

📊 The 3-question diagnostic flow
Amazon listing ranking diagnostic — run in order
QUESTION 1 Is listing Active in Seller Central? NO → Reason 1: Suppressed Fix the suppression error first YES QUESTION 2 Search ASIN + keyword. Does it appear? NO → Reason 2: Not Indexed Add keyword to title or bullets YES QUESTION 3 What page is it ranking on? Indexed but page 3–8: → Reasons 3–8 Sales velocity / CVR / reviews Search format: go to Amazon and type your product’s ASIN followed by your target keyword into the search bar

💡 The ASIN + keyword test: Search for your product on Amazon using its ASIN. If your product shows up in search results when searching with its ASIN but not when you use relevant keywords, you’ve found the root of the issue — your listing is in Amazon’s index and purchasable, but it’s not yet ranking organically for keywords.

🚫 Reason 1: Your Listing Is Suppressed

🚫
Listing suppression — Amazon has hidden your listing from search
Fix First

One of the most common causes of a listing not visible in search results is suppression due to policy violations. Amazon automatically suppresses listings that break image guidelines, miss critical attributes, or contain restricted content in titles, bullets, or descriptions.

A suppressed listing cannot rank regardless of how much PPC you run, how strong your reviews are, or how well-optimised your keywords are. Suppression is a wall — everything else is blocked behind it.

🔎
How to check: Go to Seller Central → Inventory → Manage All Inventory → filter by “Suppressed” status. Suppressed listings appear with a yellow warning and a specific error code that tells you exactly what to fix.
Main image violations: Non-white background, text overlays, watermarks, props, or product filling less than 85% of the frame are the most common suppression triggers.
Missing required attributes: Some categories require specific fields — size, material, colour — to be present. A missing required attribute can suppress the listing without you realising it.
Restricted content in copy: Certain content can trigger policy violations — for example, including keywords related to anti-itching features on a shampoo product triggered Amazon’s pesticides policy for one seller. Review all copy against Amazon’s restricted products guidelines for your category.
Fix: Address every error code shown in the suppression notice. Re-upload a compliant main image if required. Update attributes and copy as directed. Re-submission typically re-indexes within 24 to 72 hours.

🗂️ Reason 2: Your Keyword Is Not Indexed

🗂️
Keyword not indexed — Amazon does not connect your listing to the search term
High Priority

Amazon only ranks products that are indexed for a keyword. If a product is de-indexed, even great SEO, ads, or promotions won’t help — Amazon doesn’t “see” the keyword anymore.

You can be indexed for some keywords and not others. A single listing update — changing your title, editing a bullet — can accidentally remove a keyword from the indexable content, causing you to fall out of results for that specific term with no other warning.

🔎
How to check: Go to Amazon search and type: your ASIN [space] your target keyword. Example: “B09XXXXX insulated water bottle”. If your product appears — indexed. If nothing appears — not indexed. Check every target keyword separately.
Fix for primary keywords: Add the keyword to your product title — specifically in the first 5 words. Title placement has the highest indexing weight. Allow 24 to 72 hours for Amazon to re-crawl and index the change.
Fix for secondary keywords: Add to bullet points naturally, or to backend search terms. Backend terms are indexed within 24 hours in most cases.
Check after every listing edit. Any time you update your title, bullets, or backend terms, re-verify indexing for your top 5 keywords. Changes can inadvertently remove indexing for terms that were working.
📦 Amazon Account Management

Not sure why your listing stopped ranking? We diagnose it for you.

Our Amazon account management service runs a full ranking diagnosis — checking suppression status, keyword indexing, conversion rate, sales velocity, and competitor position — and builds a specific recovery plan for your situation.

📉 Reason 3: You Have No Sales Velocity

📉
No sales velocity — Amazon has no evidence your product sells for this keyword
Common — New Listings

Amazon prioritises listings that sell consistently. Not occasional spikes from discounts or ads, but steady sales over time. This is why many sellers feel like their ranking depends on PPC. When ads are active, sales increase and rankings improve. When ads stop, visibility drops. It’s not about ads — it’s about momentum. Ads simply generate the sales that Amazon uses to evaluate your listing.

Use PPC specifically to build ranking velocity. Run exact match campaigns on your target keywords. Every PPC sale on a keyword directly feeds the organic ranking signal for that keyword. Treat the PPC spend as a ranking investment, not just an ad cost.
Drive external traffic with Amazon Attribution links. Sales from outside Amazon carry additional ranking weight. A Meta or TikTok campaign driving sales to your listing with an Attribution link can accelerate ranking faster than internal ads alone.
Use coupons or promotions to boost early velocity. A temporary price reduction or coupon during launch generates the sales spike that starts the ranking flywheel — even if margin suffers short-term.
Start with lower-competition keywords. New listings cannot outrank established products on high-volume terms immediately. Target medium-competition keywords first, build rank there, then push toward higher-volume terms as sales history grows.

🎯 Reason 4: Low Conversion Rate Killing Your Position

🎯
Low conversion — Amazon is seeing clicks but not sales, and downranking you
Very Common

If shoppers see your listing but do not click it, Amazon assumes the listing is not relevant and reduces visibility. Getting traffic alone won’t improve your Amazon ranking unless it leads to actual purchases.

Amazon tracks two conversion signals: CTR (click-through rate from search results) and CVR (conversion rate on the product page). Low CTR tells Amazon your listing looks irrelevant in search. Low CVR tells Amazon your listing does not convince buyers who do click. Both drag ranking down.

🔎
How to check: In Seller Central → Business Reports → Detail Page Sales and Traffic. Check your Unit Session Percentage (conversion rate). Below 10% for most categories is a warning sign. Below 5% is actively hurting your rank.
Fix your main image first. CTR is determined almost entirely by your main image in search results. A weak thumbnail loses clicks before a buyer ever sees your bullets or price.
Rewrite bullets to lead with benefits. A listing that tells buyers what the product does for their life converts better than one that lists specifications. Feature → benefit rewriting typically lifts CVR within 14 to 21 days.
Make sure your keywords match buyer intent. A focused listing with clear keyword intent almost always performs better than one trying to target everything. Simplifying often fixes what adding more never could.

Reason 5: Low or Falling Review Rating

Review rating drop — a lower star average triggers a self-reinforcing rank spiral
Serious — Act Fast

A sudden drop in average rating can trigger a self-reinforcing problem. Lower rating leads to lower conversion, which signals weaker performance to the algorithm, which reduces visibility, which further reduces sales. The whole thing can spiral faster than most sellers expect.

🔎
How to check: Look at your star rating trend — not just your current average. A drop from 4.4 to 4.1 may look small but can meaningfully affect buyer confidence and conversion rate. Check Voice of the Customer in Seller Central for product quality feedback patterns.
Respond to all negative reviews publicly and fast. A professional response shows future buyers you care. It does not change the star rating — but it reduces the damage to conversion rate from a visible negative review.
Accelerate positive review collection. Use the Request a Review button on every order immediately. Enrol in Amazon Vine if not already active. A burst of new positive reviews can stabilise and recover your average.
Investigate the root cause. If multiple reviews mention the same product quality issue, address it at the product or packaging level. Collecting more reviews on a product with a genuine defect just generates more negative ones.
🚀 Amazon Product Launch Service

Starting fresh with a new product? Build ranking momentum from day one.

Our Amazon product launch service coordinates keyword strategy, PPC campaigns, Vine reviews, and listing optimisation so your product builds organic rank from launch — not after months of struggling to be found.

📦 Reason 6: Stockout — Past or Present

📦
Stockout damage — rank drops in 3–5 days and takes 21–28 days to recover
Most Avoidable Cause

Amazon’s algorithm likes stability — not just great listings, but predictable ones. If your inventory levels keep dropping too low or fluctuating, Amazon sees your product as a risk. Even if you never fully stock out, running low too often can still hurt your rank. Amazon quietly pushes your listing down before a full stockout even occurs.

This is one of the most painful ranking problems because all the work done to build rank disappears in days — and rebuilding it takes weeks of consistent sales. Prevention is the only real fix.

🔎
How to check: Look at your FBA inventory levels in Seller Central. Also check your Inventory Performance Index (IPI) — a low IPI can restrict how much inventory Amazon allows you to send in, which creates a circular problem.
Keep minimum 2 to 4 weeks of cover at all times. Set reorder points that account for your supplier lead time plus Amazon FBA check-in time. Do not cut it close — the ranking cost of a stockout far exceeds the cost of carrying extra inventory.
Switch to FBM temporarily when FBA stock runs low. FBM keeps your listing active and selling during a critical stock period. You lose the Prime badge but protect the sales history and ranking momentum that would otherwise disappear entirely.
Recovery plan after a stockout: Restart PPC immediately when stock returns. Run exact match on your top keywords with aggressive bids to regenerate the sales velocity that rebuilds rank. Expect 21 to 28 days of consistent performance before ranking returns to previous levels.

📂 Reason 7: Wrong Category or Product Type

📂
Wrong category — your listing is competing in the wrong search context
Often Overlooked

Category determines where Amazon shows your product in browse and which search queries it considers relevant. A product in the wrong category will never rank strongly for the keywords buyers actually use — even with perfect listing copy — because Amazon’s relevance algorithm weights category context heavily.

🔎
How to check: Search your primary keyword on Amazon. Look at what category the page-one results are listed in. If your product is in a different category from the top-ranking competitors, that mismatch is hurting your relevance score.
Request a category change via Seller Support if you believe your current category is wrong. Provide evidence — competitor ASINs in the correct category, customer feedback — to support the request.
Check your Product Type attribute. This hidden attribute — separate from your visible category — strongly influences which keywords Amazon considers relevant for your listing. Verify it matches the top sellers in your target search results.

🏆 Reason 8: Competitors Simply Got Better

🏆
Competitive displacement — your rank dropped because someone else improved, not because you got worse
Ongoing Management

When your Amazon listing suddenly drops in rankings, the cause is almost always traceable — review loss, Buy Box changes, stock-outs, or declining CTR and conversion rates. But sometimes the cause is external: a competitor improved their listing, accelerated their review count, launched better images, or cut their price. Amazon ranking is relative — your position compared to competitors, not an absolute score.

Run a competitor audit. Manually review the top 3 to 5 listings on page one for your primary keyword. How do their images compare to yours? Their review count and rating? Their pricing? Their A+ Content? Find the gap and close it.
Use Brand Analytics Search Query Performance. This shows your click share and conversion share versus competitors for each keyword. If your share is declining on a keyword, a specific competitor is gaining it. Identify who and study their listing.
Run a quarterly listing refresh. Even a listing that was excellent at launch becomes relatively dated as competitors improve over 6 to 12 months. Budget time every quarter to update images, refresh copy, and compare your listing against the current page-one standard.
📢 Amazon PPC Management

PPC is your fastest tool for rebuilding ranking momentum

Our Amazon PPC management service structures exact match campaigns on your target keywords to systematically rebuild organic rank — with weekly reporting so you can see the recovery happening.

📅 Recovery Timeline — What to Expect After Each Fix

Different ranking problems recover at different speeds. Here is what to realistically expect after applying each fix — so you know whether the treatment is working or whether something else is still wrong.

24–72 hours
Keyword indexing changes — adding a keyword to title or backend terms. Verify by running the ASIN + keyword test after 48 hours.
24–72 hours
Suppression fix — once the error is corrected and resubmitted, most listings reinstate within 1 to 3 days. Complex cases may require a Seller Support case.
14–21 days
Conversion rate improvements — new images, better bullets, updated A+ Content. Allow 2 to 3 weeks of traffic to flow through before comparing conversion rates.
21–28 days
Rank recovery after stockout — restart PPC immediately on return. Consistent sales velocity over 3 to 4 weeks typically restores previous position.
30–60 days
Review rating recovery — accelerating positive reviews through Request a Review and Vine. Rating recovery depends on volume — how fast new positive reviews dilute recent negatives.
60–90 days
Organic rank rebuilt from scratch — new product or major competitive displacement. Sustained PPC sales velocity on target keywords for 60 to 90 days typically rebuilds meaningful organic position.

⚠️ Important: Rankings naturally fluctuate, so focus on long-term trends rather than daily changes. Check ranking once per week, not every day. Daily fluctuations are normal algorithm noise. What matters is the 4-week trend — is rank improving, stable, or still falling?

❓ Quick Questions

My listing was ranking well and suddenly disappeared. What happened?
When your Amazon listing suddenly drops in rankings, the cause is almost always traceable — review loss, Buy Box changes, stock-outs, or declining CTR and conversion rates. Run the 3-question diagnostic at the top of this guide first. Check for suppression in Seller Central. Then check indexing for your top keywords. Then check whether you had a stockout or a review rating drop around the time the ranking disappeared. Most sudden rank drops have one identifiable cause.
Why is my listing indexed but still on page 5?
Being indexed means Amazon has connected your listing to the keyword and can show it in results. Ranking is determined by performance signals — primarily sales velocity and conversion rate on that specific keyword. Being on page 5 means Amazon has determined that 40 to 50 other products convert better for that keyword than yours does. The fix is increasing your sales velocity (through PPC) and conversion rate (through listing improvements) until Amazon’s algorithm promotes your position.
Will spending more on PPC fix my ranking problem?
It depends on the cause. More PPC does nothing for a suppressed listing — the listing is hidden regardless of how much you bid. More PPC does nothing for a de-indexed keyword either. But if your listing is indexed, visible, and losing rank due to insufficient sales velocity, targeted exact match PPC on your priority keywords will generate the sales signal that drives organic ranking improvement. PPC is a ranking tool when used on indexed keywords with a converting listing.
How do I check if my listing is suppressed?
Go to Seller Central → Inventory → Manage All Inventory. Use the filter dropdown to show only “Suppressed” listings. Each suppressed listing will show a yellow warning indicator and a link to the specific error codes. Fix every error code shown — not just the first one. Multiple suppression reasons can exist simultaneously, and fixing only one will not reinstate the listing if others remain.
How long does it take to recover rank after a stockout?
Negative changes like stockouts can impact ranking within 3 to 5 days, but require 21 to 28 days of consistent performance to fully recover. When stock returns, restart PPC immediately with aggressive exact match bids on your priority keywords. The sales velocity generated by PPC during the recovery period is what rebuilds the ranking signal. Do not wait for organic recovery — it will not happen without driving sales.
